Mendelevium was discovered by Albert Ghiorso, Bernard G. Harvey, Gregory R. Choppin, Stanley G. Thompson, and Glenn T. Seaborg (US) in 1955. Named in honour of Dimitri Mendelejev, the Russian chemist who devised the periodic table. It is a synthetic radioactive metal. With extremely limited amounts of Mendelevium ever being synthesized it does not have any uses outside of scientific research capacities. Mendelevium was made by bombarding einsteinium with helium ions.
